History Repeats: From the Holocaust to Gaza and Lebanon, Patterns of Displacement Persist
.
.
The world must see what is happening in real time. The tactics once used to oppress and displace European Jews before and during World War II are being recycled today, but the victims are different. In Gaza, Palestinians endure blockades, starvation, and targeted attacks. In southern Lebanon, Shiite Muslims are now being forced from their homes by the Israeli government, echoing the same strategies that European and Palestinian communities suffered decades ago. History is repeating itself, and the international community cannot remain silent.
.
.
On April 1, 2026, The New York Times reported that Israel is privately pressuring Christian and Druze local leaders in southern Lebanon to expel Shiite residents from their villages. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Shiites "will not be allowed to return" and explicitly compared Israel’s strategy in Lebanon to its actions in Gaza. The displacement zone Israel has targeted covers 10 percent of Lebanon and 20 percent of its population, including villages like Deir Saryan, which had been continuously inhabited for over 400 years. Aerial images show the village reduced to rubble, a stark visual reminder of the destructive capacity of state-backed expulsion.

“In a country full of suspicion, more than 1 million people, most of them Shiite, displaced as a result of evacuation orders and airstrikes have limited options. Some landlords in other areas refuse to rent to Shiites or demand exorbitant prices they cannot afford. I prefer to stay where I have my dignity and respect rather than live in humiliation.”
— Hussein Shuman, displaced Lebanese Shiite civilian, speaking about life as a refugee in Beirut after fleeing bombardment

This strategy is not unprecedented. In 1948, over 750,000 Palestinians were forcibly expelled from their homes during the Nakba, with more than 5,300 villages destroyed. In Gaza, the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants against Israeli officials for using starvation as a weapon of war.
Now, in Lebanon, the Israeli government is sending a clear warning to local populations: do not hide your neighbors, do not resist these removals. The methods—fear, displacement, and the deliberate alteration of demographics—echo the practices Europeans faced when hiding Jews could invite punishment or death.
The parallels to pre- and during-World War II Europe are striking. During the Holocaust, governments and collaborators sought to erase entire communities through systematic expulsion, confiscation, and violence. Today, a different population faces similar tactics. Shiite Muslims in Lebanon, Palestinians in Gaza, and historically, European Jews have all been subject to displacement, blockades, and the destruction of homes. While the perpetrators and victims vary, the playbook is the same: governments willing to disregard human life will act repeatedly if the international community does not intervene.
.
This repetition of history carries a moral imperative. The phrase "Never Again" must mean protection for all human beings, not a slogan applied selectively. Global institutions and governments have the responsibility to recognize these patterns, to speak out, and to take action before more lives and communities are destroyed. Witnessing forced displacement, systematic expulsion, and state-backed violence is not a matter of distant news. It is an urgent call to recognize that history is unfolding in real time, and the lessons of the past must inform our response now.
The international community must treat these events with the gravity they deserve. Ignoring repeated patterns of oppression, whether in Gaza or Lebanon, is to permit history to repeat itself. Documentation, reporting, and global attention are critical. Governments, media, and citizens alike must hold power accountable, for the alternative is a continuation of strategies that have already caused incalculable suffering across generations.
