This story takes place a few years after Severus and Lily had graduated from Hogwarts. The incident under the tree, involving the bullies James Potter and Sirius Black, did indeed occur. However, Lily, using her intellect, listened to Severus when he pleaded for her forgiveness and took to heart what he had to say. Severus never became a Death Eater—Lily had made him promise to avoid the 'Junior Death Eaters' entirely or, at the very least, to be cautious and refuse any requests they made. Severus wholeheartedly agreed to this. Lily maintained her good taste and never gave Potter the time of day, so she was never romantically involved with him (thank goodness). For those who might miss it in the story, this scene is set in the living room of Lily's flat (the city is undisclosed, as I haven't decided whether they are in Britain or somewhere else in Europe). Remember, Severus and Lily have been best friends since early childhood. By their fifth year, they had grown closer, going on 'dates' to Hogsmeade and such, but they were not 'seriously' dating until now.

Severus asked her, "What do you want in love…or lust?"

Lily looked at him, her thoughts so intense that they might scare him, especially since she wanted all of it with him. Yet all she could say was, "I don't know."

She felt guilty for not being completely honest but was afraid of how he might react to knowing she wanted him, loved him, needed him, yearned for him, and even wished to carry his child.

Turning away, she resumed brushing her hair. She knew Severus was perceptive enough to sense there was more to her answer, that she did indeed know what she wanted.

What she didn't realize was that Severus secretly wanted her to admit she desired him, so he could express how much he wanted her in return. He feared he would never feel safe revealing his feelings due to the scars left by his childhood, especially without knowing for sure that she wanted him just as much.

Severus had no idea how to help Lily trust him, as he was more afraid of trusting her than she was of trusting anyone. Despite this, he trusted her more than he had ever trusted anyone. He wanted to be the one to make her happy, to give her the children he knew she secretly yearned for, and to please her for the rest of their lives.

He rose from the sofa in her cozy loft living room, stepped up behind her, and closed his eyes as he inhaled the sweet scent of her neck.  As a potions master, he easily identified the scents on her: lavender and roses. He loved that smell. He loved her.

His hands trembled slightly as he gently placed them on the inside of her hips and slowly wrapped his arms around her until she was securely in his embrace, her back and bottom brushing against his chest.

He wished to live in this moment forever, to savor her scent. At the same time, he longed to kiss the back of her neck, sending shivers down her spine, to turn her face to him and kiss her deeply until she wrapped her arms around his neck and accepted him as her man. Instead, he simply held her close and kissed her lightly above her right ear on her temple. He thought to himself, *She’ll come to want me in her own time. All I can do is give her space and show her that I will always be here for her and that I want her completely.*

Severus didn't realize that when he wrapped his arms around Lily, she could barely keep her knees steady. Nor did he know that she had to hide the fact that she had drawn in her breath when he touched her hips.

Lily felt Severus stand up behind her, sensed his warm breath on her neck, and smelled his scent as he stood close, almost touching. Her heart raced as his hands lightly traced her body from her hips to her waist and then wrapped around her. All she could think, as he kissed her temple, was that if he did that again, she couldn’t be held responsible for her actions. A woman could only endure so much before succumbing to her deepest desires! She leaned her head back onto his chest, clutching her brush as if it were a lifeline to propriety, and said, "Well, I'm ready. Do you still want to try out a Muggle eatery and go to the theater, or would you prefer to head into wizarding London instead?"

He lowered his head and gently kissed the top of her head, saying, "I promised I would brave Muggle food and take you to the ballet you wanted to see. When I give my word, I don't back out…you know that, Lily."

For those still wondering about a few characters: (1) I never promised to include anyone other than Severus and Lily in this story. (2) I strongly dislike James Potter and Sirius Black, so if they appear in my stories, they will meet a violent end and be portrayed as the immature, spoiled bullies they were. The same applies to Peter Pettigrew, Ron Weasley, and Ginny Weasley. Why? I find Ginny’s end with Harry Potter ridiculous; he needs someone like Hermione Granger. Ron simply wants to bask in Harry Potter’s fame and is an idiot. As for Peter, well, no one likes him.
